Prior to Sunday Wyndham Clark had played half a dozen Majors, missed the cut at four and had a best finish at a Major of a tied for 75th.
Yet on 17 and 18 yesterday it looked like he had done it all before, showing nerves of steel to hit a chip stone dead on 17 and then two putt from 60 feet on 18 to beat out the challenge of Rory Mcilroy by one.
For Mcilroy the eight years, 10 months and nine days or put another way 33 Majors since his last Major win in 2014, continues. This one will hurt though given how close he was and how poorly he putted as he laboured his way round for an Even par 70 when a simple one under would have forced a playoff!
One also has to feel for Rickie. We were rooting for him but after three days of good golf he faded away with a 5 over 75 to slide down the leaderboard and finish in a tie for fifth with Tommy Fleetwood who fired a sublime 63 for the low round of the day.
Over on Golf Champs it was far more comfortable for Zane Saayman with picks of Clark, Fleetwood, Fowler and Mcilroy who saw him finish four clear of the chasing pack in second. This means a new Titleist driver courtesy of The Courier Guy is heading Zane's way.
